Creation of a European network of sanctuaries for marine mammals

Cetasea is a 1% For The Planet approved association

A FINDING...

The proposed law provides for the end of the captivity of wild species used for commercial purposes (Chapter III of the proposed law), and provides for the creation of "refuges" or "sanctuaries" to provide care or accommodate animals whose the owners separate.

With nearly 300 dolphins in European facilities, 75% of which were born in captivity, transition centers for which Cetasea presents a realistic concept are essential.

Our plan guarantees a future for captive marine mammals that will be studied and considered for each individual, on a case-by-case basis by marine mammal professionals and specialized veterinarians. The living environment proposed by the Cetasea project is adequate and conducive to the well-being of the species. The animals will live in reconstituted lagoons with natural stimuli so that they do not suffer from the various pollutions and that they are not confronted with viruses and bacteria present in the natural environment, totally absent in captivity.
When individuals or groups of animals are ready to live in an existing closed bay, they could be sent there after the validation of the decision group.

THE CITIZEN OF THE SOLUTION

Cetasea aims to create a network of sanctuaries/refuges for marine mammals.

Like other refuges/sanctuaries, they will not replace zoological parks but it is a response to overcrowding, structures that are closing, stranded animals that can be saved...

Like sanctuaries/sanctuaries for terrestrial animals and birds, they can be closed or in semi-freedom. It will depend on the case, the health of the animals….

Like the other shelters, the reception may be temporary if another place is more suitable for the animal. It will be possible to send an individual from a closed center to a semi-natural environment. The animals will be followed by veterinarians and trainers.

The conservation project will be interesting and active in this sense.

Our facilities will work with existing parks to advance conservation and wellness work.

France is one of the only countries to be surrounded by two seas and one ocean, so it is interesting to create several centers. Note that in Holland, they are building the 5th center, while there is already a large marine park in addition that already hosts marine mammals) and yet their coast is very small…. And everything works!

We are located in the heart of Europe which is home to many zoos and circuses. Europe is the victim of many strandings. It is useful to create a European network. This is what we are proposing with our European plan. We could welcome seals in distress, relieve suffering wild dolphins, even if we can only save a small percentage!

Our refuges/sanctuaries will also have research projects, the conservation project which was established by a Doctor of Biology specialist in dolphins and above all an educational program, we protect what we know.
We must put our protection plan for marine mammals on the same footing as for other species (terrestrial and birds).

Cetasea brings together scientists, veterinarians experienced in the care of marine mammals and also committed caregivers.

We also have good partners, unity is strength!

dolphins are real ecological sentinels of the health of ecosystems...

Protecting them means protecting all species, protecting us!

Cetasea is a recognized association of general interest, this should not remain just a name but a real commitment!

Cetasea aims
to find solutions
for MARINE animals
in need

We protect what we know

The Cetasea association under the 1901 law brings together scientists, biologists, doctors of biology, conservation specialists, trainers, veterinarians, experienced veterinarians for marine mammals.

Creation of a refuge for marine mammals replicable in all European countries.

This already exists for terrestrial species and birds. Shelters are places of welcome in which certain animals can be in temporary residence until a better place for the animal is proposed, or keep them for life because it is the best solution for them. Animals that live in a sanctuary have the opportunity to behave as naturally as possible in a protective environment. Have time to find the best solutions for each individual in order to avoid stress. A move is a big stress for humans, but also for wildlife.

What Cetasea will allow

The protection of marine biodiversity A great educational hook. Creating a European network of refuges for marine mammals Promoting the welcoming region for its involvement in environmental protection Job creation Economic dynamism Diversification for eco-tourism Opening up to Europe and the world

CETASEA acting non-profit, we constantly need support to carry out our projects.
By participating in our action, you will contribute to providing better living conditions for marine mammals.

We believe in ethical rights marine mammals because of their complex individuality, great emotional capacity and intelligence.

Freedom for intelligent species includes freedom of choice, which means that each individual cetacean can choose to interact, play, socialize, mate and reproduce...

Nevertheless, with the original capture and subsequent breeding of cetaceans in human care facilities, we have created a new population that is spatially separated from nature, but genetically still strongly related to it.

As a result of these actions, we recognize that we have a responsibility to care for this population and for each individual.

Nos actions

ACTIONS ALREADY TAKEN BY CETASEA

  • Raising awareness of the protection of marine biodiversity
  • Beach and Forest Cleanups
  • Events on the themes of species protection, creation of the Cetasea Festival
  • Educational activities in schools, leisure centers and media libraries
  • La séquère concert in Seignosse (for the benefit of cetasea)
  • Awareness stands (Bordeaux, Antwerp, Liège, Seignosse, Hossegor, Vieux-boucau, Sanguinet, Brussels, Ghent).
  • Surf'n Yoga activities in Hossegor

CETASEA WAS THERE

  • Animals day, Belgium
  • OceanFestival, Belgium
  • Climax Festival, Bordeaux
  • Newave Festival (Seignosse)

The project must be duplicated in Europe in order to avoid overcrowding, manage the groups as well as possible, and have time to choose the right decisions on a case-by-case basis.

The shelters will not be intended to keep the animals but to find the best places for them, if not, to keep them in good conditions. As do all refuges for other species.

The important thing is to work together as wildlife parks do with land animals and birds.

Jean Marc BARR

Sponsor of the association
The film "Le Grand Bleu" was adored by a whole generation of spectators who were passionate about apnea, captivated by dolphins and bewitched by Jean-Marc BARR.

The decor was magical, the sea clear and the dolphins were jumping for joy. 30 years later, the film could be different... the shooting would perhaps be disturbed by the number of plastic in the water and by the stranding of animals on the beaches.

With “le Grand Bleu”, the life of Jean-Marc Barr has changed, first thanks to his role but also by the knowledge of the sea.
He continued as a freediver and is sounding the alarm because it is high time to take care of our oceans and the species that live there.
Half of the oxygen in the atmosphere comes from the oceans thanks to phytoplankton.

The dolphin, with its smile and friendly air, is the ambassador of marine animals, it plays a role in marine ecosystems. A great honor for Cetasea!

OFFICERS

Frederique Gilbert

Founder and Director of Cetasea
I always wanted to protect species, now it becomes an emergency!
I worked for more than 15 years with marine mammals, thanks to this experience, I founded the Cetasea association. "Unity is strength!" I am oriborn in Belgium and this sentence has always followed me :)
I live in the southwest of France, close to the ocean.
My goal is to create sanctuaries for marine mammals in Europe. Research and pedagogy will be essential... we protect what we know!
